Coronavirus and Pregnancy

I hope all of you are doing well. The topic of today's article is corona and pregnancy.Nowadays as you know the corona pandemic is on the rise and in this mater RCOG meaning the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists UK and center of disease control and prevention United States have collected a lot of data regarding pregnant ladies and did a lot of research and then provided guidelines.Today we will answer many questions of pregnant ladies in light of these guidelines.

lets see what do pregnant ladies have questions about regarding corona.

Question number 1 is can pregnant ladies catch Covid 19?

The answer is yes.It is very possible rather the chances of catching covid in pregnant ladies are more than non pregnant ladies. Why is that? Pregnancy is such a stage in which your immunity system is already working less so catching any kind of infection is very common.it is seen in different studies if covid infection is caught then many pregnant women seem to be asymptomatic, meaning they do not show signs and some are there who have mild symptoms meaning a little bit of fever or flu like symptoms. The percentage who would be very unwell is very less, meaning there would be very less ladies who would be admitted in the hospital.

What are those?

If you catch infection in your third trimester,or your age is above 35,or you are over weight, for example your BMI is above 25.Moreover, such women in whom during pregnancy have complications before infection, meaning they have diabetes or high blood pressure beforehand. These women have a higher chance of strong symptoms of covid.

The second question is, if one catches Covid, what are the affects of it on pregnancy? In many studies, that have been conducted in UK and America,in which it is seen that when Covid happens during pregnancy complications can increase.Top of the list is increase of 2 to 3 times preterm labour meaning deliveries before time. The second important complication is preeclampsia, meaning your blood pressure can rise during pregnancy.Third, chances of still birth. And forth, your rate of having cesarean increases. The next question is, if Covid is caught during pregnancy,

how will it affect the baby?

Many studies conducted have shown that there is no affect of Covid on the baby's development, because Covid virus does not have a vertical transmission, meaning it does not travel from mother to baby. That is why there is no affect of it on the baby's development.

The next very important question is should one take Covid vaccine during pregnancy? The answer is yes.Because this vaccination is not live vaccination, meaning it is not made out of live virus, that is why it is safe to take this vaccination during pregnancy, and you can take this vaccination during any stage of your pregnancy.Just like how you can take flu vaccination at any stage likewise you can take doses of Covid vaccine at any stage during pregnancy.Another advantage of this would be that the antibodies made in you due to this vaccine they would reach your baby through your placenta and your baby will remain safe.

The next question is, can breastfeeding mothers take vaccination? The answer is yes! Surely they can. Because the virus does not secrete in the breast milk and this vaccination is safe during breast feeding. Some women ask that different kinds of vaccinations are available, then which one should we get?You get whatever vaccine that is available in your country, for example in Pakistan, there is Chinese vaccine, Moderna, Pfizer etc all these vaccines are pregnancy safe because as I told you earlier, they are not made out of live virus.

The most important question is, that many women ask, those women who are planning to get pregnant, should they get vaccinated too?For them it is said, all those women above 18 years should get vaccinated and they should eliminate this myth from their minds that this vaccine would have any affect on your fertility. There is no affect of it on your fertility of any sorts which is clear in different studies.

Lastly, some questions come that, if one gets Covid in pregnancy then what should one do?If you get infected by Covid then contact your doctor first and foremost, keep their contact details with you, isolate yourself, take care of your hydration meaning you must keep your fluid intake high, your diet must be healthy and balanced, take supplements of calcium and vitamin D and you can add vitamin C too.If you start to feel your symptoms are getting harsher, then contact your doctor immediately,so that if hospital admission is needed then it can be arranged timely.I hope today's article was very informative for you and you got answers to your questions.
