Body mass index can be calculated using your weight and height.If your BMI before pregnancy is below 18,then you are underweight.Then you would have to gain more weight during pregnancy.And how much weight gain should be done?Almost 13 to 18 Kg should be gained.Similarly,those people whose weight comes in the normal limits,meaning their BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9.These people lie in the normal weight range,and they should gain about 11 to 13 kg during pregnancy.And if your BMI lies between 25 and 29.9 that means you were over weight before pregnancy.Then during pregnancy 7 to 11 kg weight gain should be done.And if before your pregnancy,you are obese, meaning your BMI is greater than 30 then you only need 5 to 9 Kgs of weight gain during pregnancy.Now if we see, that during the start of pregnancy not that much weight is gained.In the first trimester, you only gain 0.5 to 1.8 Kgs of weight and many people even loose weight during the first trimester, because many face nausea and vomiting and have food aversions which contributes to no weight being gained.But as the pregnancy progresses,you would need some extra calories.During your second trimester, almost 200 extra calories and in third, 300 extra calories are needed.And it will help in your total weight gain.As the pregnancy proceeds your weight would rise till delivery at the rate of 0.5 Kg per week.Now lets discuss if your weight has increased too much then what can be it's complications.You can encounter gestational diabetes during pregnancy,or your blood pressure can increase,or your baby may be over weight,which can lead to cesarean instead of normal delivery,and if you're having normal delivery, then too you may face many complications due to being over weight.Lastly let me share some tips for healthy weight gain.It is commonly seen that many people around us start forcing pregnant women around them to eat a lot,saying that you are now eating for two.Please avoid this completely.You must take a normal and well balanced diet, you will need this a lot.You don't need more food, you need balanced good food.How can you do that?Your diet should contain proteins,like chicken, meat, fish,milk, egg, etc,and it should also contain carbohydrates,like roti, chapati, pasta, rice, etc.Moreover, you should have, fruits, vegetable, whole grains.These all will be a good nutritious diet.Those extra calories required during pregnancy this balanced diet will fulfil them all.Hence pay extra attention towards your diet during pregnancy,and watch your weight gain that it doesn't exceed the normal range.Try not to gain too much weight that after delivery it becomes a headache for you to loose.
