Misconceptions About Pregnancy

If you want to know about misconceptions about pregnancy then this article is for you because in this article we will tell you all about misconceptions about pregnancy

So We get many patients, besides you also get to see this in daily life, that whenever a lady gets pregnant, a lot of people including family start giving all sorts of advices. Some advise about food, some about rest, some advise to stop exercising, ...so...Today we thought, we should try to remove such misconceptions.

1.Diet

First of all, lets address misconceptions regarding diet. First and foremost, thing that happens is that, the pregnant woman is told that you have to eat MORE! By more they mean to say, since you are 2 people now, you and the baby in the womb, hence you should start eating for 2 people! So in such cases, you should know, that a balanced diet is important in pregnancy! Because in your first trimester, you only need a few extra calories per day.

In your second trimester, around 300 extra calories per day, and,in the last trimester, you would need about 500 extra calories per day. So for this, you should not aim to increase the quantity of the food, rather you should increase the quality of your diet.

Meaning it should consist of carbohydrates, proteins and fats, fiber, vitamins and minerals.

This would be your balanced diet. It is commonly seen that poor pregnant lady is force fed so much believing in their misconceptions that ladies have trouble reducing all that gained weight.

Moreover, due to increasing weight, a lot of complications can arise during pregnancy and delivery.

So try not to focus on eating too much, rather focus on the quality of your diet.

2.labelled food

Secondly misconceptions about pregnancy, it is seen that foods get labelled at hot or cold!

For example, we have mangoes, fish ,egg.

I remember once, a lady came to my clinic, and she was pregnant at the time, but her bleeding started, it was her 8th or 9th week.

Her mother in law was with her and as soon as her mother in law entered my room through the door, she started screaming that I used to stop her from eating mangoes, now look she's having problems due to that!

They came to get an ultrasound scan, and when I scanned her uterus, I could clearly see that the baby was not growing, that's why her periods started! It was definitely not because of eating mangoes! On the other hand if we look at mangoes, it is a good nutritious fruit.

It has ample amounts of vitamins and glucose, taking 1 or 2 would not harm you at all! Similarly, we have egg, that is a huge source of protein, you can have eggs 3 to 4 times a week without hesitation. Please stop believing in misconceptions about it being hot for the body. Similarly, we have such beliefs about fish. It is a great source of protein and iodine etc and omega-3 fatty acids, which are very important for your body. You can easily have fish 2-3 times a week. It isn't hot for your body and will not harm the baby. Orange and grapefruit are also targetted.

similarly, saying that they are cold for the body and cause abortions. Even though they have great amounts of vitamin C which is very important for your iron absorption.

Similarly,

Milk and yogurt are also defamed, firstly saying that having milk/yogurt will cause sputum formation meaning chest congestion will be caused. Milk/yogurt are a great source of calcium!

And you need calcium to develop your baby's bones. That's why, you should take milk daily at least 1-2 times, and even if you have yogurt in small amounts it will not cause chest congestion!

3.Milk Mixed With Clarified Butter

Secondly, some people complain that our mother in law says that you should take milk mixed with clarified butter for good health, even though the woman doesn't feel like drinking it. So you should know that clarified butter is only adding extra fat and calories to your diet

and giving you no nutrition!

So if you want to use clarified butter, it would be better if you put it in some gravy otherwise you don't need extra fat in your diet.

4.Colout of Baby

Furthermore, many people assume that taking bright or white foods will result in fairer babies and darker foods will cause a dark colored baby!

Some people think coffee and tea to be a dark food and so leave it out of their diets.

Taking a bit of tea or coffee is quiet alright, you don't have to leave it totally! Coming to the complexion of your baby, depends only and only on it's genetics. It does not depend on milk/yogurt/tea/coffee! So believe that these things have no influence on your baby! You must have seen pregnant ladies having food cravings of items that are not food.

For example, some women start eating soil, some start eating ice, so people assume that it is because of the baby. It is not true! Get your blood hemoglobin levels checked because such cravings are noticed in iron deficiency.

5.Walk

Sometimes it has been noted, that some women love to walk but as soon as they get pregnant they are told to just take rest.

"You can not walk now!" Please don't do that! You can easily walk daily for at least 30 minutes and you can do moderate exercises as well in pregnancy. It does not harm the baby! Please remove such misconceptions about pregnancy from your head.

6.Post Delivery

Last misconceptions about pregnancy is, it has been seen post delivery, that women are not allowed to have water.

Assuming that your stomach will swell up! So, please think now, if she will not have water post delivery, she has to feed her baby, how do you think will she produce breast milk?!

Similarly, there is a common symptom of pregnancy seen that you suffer heart burn or digestion issues because of reduced motility in your intestines.

Many people start suggesting fizzy drinks thinking it will help in digestion and you will get relieved of gas.

So before doing this, please consider that what ever gas comes out is of that fizzy drink because they are carbonated drinks and carbonated drinks cause dehydration in pregnancy which is not good for a pregnant lady.

I hope in today's article, a lot of your misconceptions regarding pregnancy have been cleared away.
